"Catch of the Day was born from my desire to capture pure momentum, where speed, chaos and tension catch your eye at first glance.
Wind and water were natural elements to set the stage for that idea. Combined with my wish to design both flying creatures and some mechanical design, they gave rise to the story of a struggle to bring back the catch of the day amid the elements and the forces of nature.
The theme comes from my childhood: I wanted the composition to read like a frozen action frame from a shonen manga of those years, while keeping the feeling of speed of epic animation.
The characters emerge in this scene as a big sister and her little brother, fiercely fighting for their catch against impressive flying creatures determined to claim their share.
This piece is above all a tribute to traditional sculpture, a craft I love and want to share. That approach was important to me, as it let me slowly reveal the volumes as they will be in the end, without any filter. Apart from the mechanical parts of the bike, made digitally, sculpting this scene the old-fashioned way was an adventure in itself!
I wanted to find a balance between a simplified and a realistic approach, in order to exaggerate expressivity while keeping the scene grounded and full of crisp details.
I hope the passion, craft and joy I put into “Catch of the Day” will make you smile and carry you into its universe for a moment."
